Weather

Mach’s best kept secret? The weather. No kidding.

Given our location, we get more than our fair share of clear, dry and sunny spells. That means opportunity for play almost every day.

Here’s why.

Situated on the Scottish mainland at the southwestern tip of the Kintyre peninsula, Machrihanish enjoys somewhat atypical weather conditions for its latitude that enable golf to be played throughout the year.

The Gulf Stream, a strong ocean current, helps keep the west coast of the UK a few degrees warmer than the east, a difference most strongly felt along the coast and islands of the west of Scotland. The current originates in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and splits in two with the North Atlantic Drift being the arm that travels up past the Scottish coastline. The result of this is that average air and sea temperatures are higher in the west of Scotland and have a resultant effect on the land.

It is not unusual therefore to have clear, dry days throughout the winter in Machrihanish and sustained periods of dry, mild weather throughout the spring, summer and autumn. The combination of these factors and the excellent year-round turf conditions make golf possible throughout the year for our members and visitors alike.
