Viking Classic 2011

Tartan Barmy Victory in Soren’s Viking Classic

Following the decision earlier in the year to cancel the Machrihanish Golf Club Pro-Am due to rising costs and lack of sponsorship, it looked like there would be a free week in the fixture list for September at the club.

However, Soren Hundeboll and his firm INSUBIZ, had other ideas and came forward with a proposal and sponsorship which resulted in the birth of the Viking Classic. Soren, now resides back in Denmark after several years working in the UK, and was warmly welcomed back at the club last weekend along with the other travelling INSUBIZ team members.

The Viking Classic is a four person team event and the format was originally to card the best net score at the first six holes, best two net scores for the next six, and three combined scores for the last six. Unfortunately the weather hi-jacked the format and common sense prevailed in proceeding with a single best net score for the whole 18.

31 teams turned out on the day including the two INSUBIZ teams, who were unmistakeable, all sporting bright green shirts whenever the weather permitted the waterproofs to be taken off.

Play got underway at 8.00am with the True Blues and a Don striking the first tee shots over the beach to launch the inaugural Viking Classic.

Despite encountering some of the wettest conditions of the day, the early clubhouse leaders were “Nae Breaks” consisting of A Johnstone, J McPhee, R McGougan and I McLennan after returning with a score of 60. Their score stood well into the afternoon despite a strong challenge from G MacMillan along with Calum MacMillan, Willie MacMillan and John MacMillan who finished with a 62. Further 62’s were put on the scoreboard by Grahams Boys, Kingsworth, and Coo’s and Cakes by the end of play.

In the absence of regular team member, Barry Colville, the Tartan Barmy had to call up super sub, Davie Wallace to assist Jim McCallum, Iain Reid and Steven Dott in the quest to be the first winners of the Viking Classic. Bringing in Wallace turned out to be a master stroke as he carded two hard fought net birdies over the first and second in the toughest of weather conditions, to get the momentum going early.

Tartan Barmy marched to the turn in a seven under par 28, but had the harder inward still to come. The wind was relentless, however so was the determination of the Tartan Barmy to restore some team pride following the disappointment of disqualification from the Shepherds Cross event just over a month ago. To this end, six more net birdies were scored on the way home, and it was “mission accomplished” for the Tartan Barmy with a winning score of 57.

Playing in the game behind were Frustration, represented by Robert McCallum, A McCallum, J McCallum and N Johnstone who took second place with a 59 after scoring 3 net one’s on the card at the 4th, 7th, and the 16th.

The day ended with Nae Breaks holding onto third place, and Grahams Boys took fourth place after a count back to push G MacMillan’s team out of the prizes by the narrowest of margins.

Soren presented the prizes at the end of the day including some special hole prizes that were sponsored by Braedstrup VVS, BDO Accounting, Springbank, Insubiz, K P Service and Dumfries and County Golf Club.

Machrihanish Golf Club would like to extend thanks to Soren and all sponsors for their support of the event which we hope will be a popular team event for many years to come.
