Club Championship Final Rounds

The final two rounds of the club championship were played last weekend. The weather was much improved in comparison to the opening two rounds the previous weekend. George MacMillan regained the club championship winning the title for a fifth time with a two shot victory over defending champion, Oliver Armour, and 2012 champion, David Graham. George had the luxury of bogeying the 72nd hole after playing partner, David Graham, drove out-of-bounds at the last. In fact, David was one stroke clear of George with three holes to go but a poor finish handed the title back to George. Oliver Armour put up a brave defence of his trophy but a three putt bogey on the 71st hole ended his chances.

The seniors’ championship was retained by Machrihanish greenkeeper, David Irwin. The over 55’s competition broke tradtion this year and was played over all of the four days. This followed a decision of the golf club committee, last July, in relation to a proposal from a club member to increase the competition to 72 holes strokeplay, following a change to playing the club championship over four rounds on separate days.

Meanwhile, in the Bob Ballantyne Memorial Shield, combined nett scores played over the last two rounds, the competition was won by country member, Donald MacNeil, with two fine rounds of 72 and 75. Playing off 5, Donald’s combined nett score of 137 resulted in a two stroke victory over Ian McGougan.
