The 13th
Am-Am took place at Machrihanish Golf Club on Saturday 24th
May. Thirty nine teams competed for The Cruachan Am-Am Cup which
was donated by the late, former captain, Gordon H V Campbell in
2002. In a dry but breezy and overcast day, mixed with some late
sunshine, the four person better ball team format resulted in
the former winners in 2007 recapturing the trophy in superb
style. The team from Springbank, one of the joint sponsors of
the event, shot an unbelievable nett score of 54 to win by two
shots. The winning team consisted of Stuart Campbell, Gavin
McLachlan, Ranald Watson and John McLean.
The ever popular Am-Am was jointly sponsored by
Springbank, The Ardshiel Hotel and Drumore Pine. On one of the
most eagerly awaited days in Machrihanish’s golf calendar, the
scores produced by the five teams on the prize list were truly
excellent. It really was a case of “horses-for-courses” with the
first four teams having previously won the competition. Last
year’s winners, Andrew Robertson, Kevan Gilchrist, Graham
Gilchrist and Alan Glendinning put up a valiant effort in
defending the trophy with a 3rd place finish, only
missing out on the runners up spot on the count back rule to
Charles McIntyre, John Lamont, Donald MacKinnon and Fergus
Walker. The 2012 winning team of Finlay Wylie, David Campbell,
Neil McCallum and Ian McGougan were fourth, again by virtue of
the count back rule, with 5th place, recording a nett
58, being taken by Willie MacDonald, Duncan MacDonald, Ray
Mitchell and John Stewart.
Club captain, David Rankin, thanked the main sponsors for their
extremely generous support and also gave a big thanks to the
other sponsors who so generously donated prizes played for on
all eighteen holes.
The prizes were
presented by Mairi Campbell, wife of Springbank Company
Secretary and Director, and part of the winning team, Stuart
Campbell.
The raffle for the set
of irons was won by Andrew Anderson, son of vice-captain,
Graham.
