Members Newsletter - 14th January 2019

This Newsletter is designed to be the first of a regular series to keep all members up to date with the position regarding our Clubhouse following the devastating fire of 19th December.

As you will be aware the fire broke out at lunchtime on that day and quickly spread through the building. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the fire but our Steward, Iain, and his family lost their possessions as the upstairs flat was destroyed. Many of you will also have lost clubs and possessions in the fire as the locker room was destroyed.

Thanks is due to those members and staff who were on hand to remove memorabilia from the clubhouse in the early stages of the fire and to those members who have been of assistance in getting a new working base established for Margaret and Adele in the Ladies Clubhouse. Having this temporary base has allowed Margaret and Adele to establish as much of a ‘Business as Usual' operation as possible.

It is of course business as usual on the course as there was no damage to the course or Professional's Shop. Following the fire we have had several members along with other professionals at other courses who have lent Jennie some sets of clubs for members to use in the short term. There are 20 sets of these clubs available for use - so give Jennie or Anthony a call on 01586 810277 and get out playing.

The Committee have met on several occasions since the fire to hear from Captain, Calum MacMillan and Vice-Captain, Willie Ross on how things are developing with regard to the Insurers and their investigations into the fire. Given the timing of the fire and the Christmas holiday period this has been a frustrating time for us as we have awaited the outcomes of all our discussions and meetings with loss adjuster and insurance company.

We can now share the news that following an intensive forensic investigation along with confirmation of our maintenance records on the clubhouse that the Insurers have now accepted liability for the loss. Following a visit from the structural engineer we have also heard of his decision that the building be written off. This means that we will shortly contract a demolition firm to demolish and remove what remains of the clubhouse. This will be a sad day for many who will have long lasting memories of time spent in this building and will for a short time leave a blank space in the skyline of Machrihanish.

The opportunity and challenge now is to replace the old with the new and build a new modern facility fit for the needs of the 21st Century golfer and that members will look forward to using for many years to come in the future.

The Committee are moving ahead with investigations into the suitability of various architects to design, plan and build a new clubhouse. We are visiting East Kilbride Golf Club, whose club house was destroyed in 2010 and have benefitted from their new design and build.
We have been in regular contact with Glasgow Golf Club who suffered a large blaze in September and who are just 12 weeks ahead of us in this process and whose experiences have been interesting and useful for us as we manage a similar situation.
Clearly, you can see even in these 2 cases the Clubhouse is as individual as the golf course. We will not be looking for a replica of any clubhouse but will be focused on the needs of you - the members, wherever you are worldwide. We are immensely proud of our rankings in terms of the course and see this as an opportunity to build a clubhouse to match that course ranking.

Now that we have the green light from the Insurers we have a huge task ahead of us in developing our vision, turning it into a plan and seeing it build and develop in front of us. It is the intention that these weekly newsletters keep you up to speed with these developments and let you feel a part in the project.

Where appropriate we will approach the membership for ideas and views on what should be in the new clubhouse and this may take the form of members Forums, questionnaires or surveys. There is one undeniable truth that we are fully aware of as we embark on this project - we cannot meet the individual preferences of 900 members!

Members who lost clubs etc in the locker room will shortly receive an email from the Insurers about the procedure for any claim.

There will be a Callaway session on the 23rd and 27th of January and the 5th February. Anthony will be running these sessions so again please phone the Shop to book.
