Charity Open

2012_05_12 The first of the Open competitions took place at the Machrihanish Golf Club last weekend with 128 competitors supporting the event where the proceeds are donated to charity.

Children First and MacMillan Cancer Relief were the recipient charities for the donations and representatives from the local groups thanked the Club for holding the event, and to the players for their support of the competition and the raffle.

The course was playing with its familiar wind assisted outward nine, followed by a tough inward against a stiff breeze, with most of the field getting round in dry conditions.

Following on from his recent success in the Centenary Cup, Stuart Campbell completed his early morning round with a 74 to secure the scratch prize by virtue of the better inward half. S Gilmour and I Martin also had 74’s with David Graham in 4th place with a 76 to complete the order of merit in the scratch section.

The early clubhouse leader in the handicap competition was Jim McCallum who made it to the turn one under par, courtesy of birdies at the 3rd and 9th. Steady play into the wind on the way back resulted in a 75-8=67 being posted and a long anxious wait followed for McCallum as the rest of the days play continued.

Craig Barr had the ideal start to the day with birdies at the first and third to get him into contention. Craig resisted the temptation of getting sucked into the usual longest drive competition with regular playing partners, Roberston and Davis, and concentrated on the target McCallum had set earlier in the day.

Despite a double bogey at the last Craig made it to the clubhouse with 78-11=67 and secured first place by the narrowest of margins.

N J McCallum finished third with 79-11=68, and Hector Thomson in fourth with 84-16=68.

Andrew Wallace put together a fantastic round including 10 pars and a birdie in the junior competition to finish with a 77-10=67, which will see his handicap reduced to single figures and another step closer to being the lowest handicap in the Wallace household.

Ladies scratch prize went to Ann Gallacher with around of 89, and the ladies handicap was won with an 88-13=75 from K Docherty.

Captain, John Biggins hosted the prize giving along with his wife, Dorothy, who kindly presented the prizes to the winners.
