After a fantastic two days of golf in glorious sunshine at Machrihanish Golf Club, Craig Pirie of Millport Golf Club emerged as the new Argyll and Bute County Matchplay Champion defeating defending champion Graham Bolton of Rothesay Golf Club 5&4 in the final.
Young Pirie now holds both the county matchplay and strokeplay championships, a tremendous achievement for the young Millport master.
Pirie defeated local boys Lee Mathieson and George MacMillan on his way to the final in the top half of the draw. Bolton took care of Mark Davis, Steven Gilmour and David Graham (all members of Machrhanish GC) to progress through to the final in the bottom half of the draw.
The final was initially a tense affair with Pirie taking an early lead with a chip in birdie 3 at the 1st hole. The finalist then traded holes at the 5th and 7th and through 10 holes Pirie maintained a slender one hole lead. However pars at the 11th, 13th and 14th and a birdie 4 at the long par 5 12th were enough to consign Bolton to defeat. Pirie proved a worthy and deserving winner.
Argyll and Bute Golf Union thanked Machrihanish Golf Club for hosting this year's event and thanked the greens staff in particular for turning the course out in such immaculate condition.
