John MacLean

The John MacLean competition was played for over the weekend of the 29 th and 30 th August with the winner being the player recording the lowest combined gross scores. This year's competition bore similarities to last year, with the top two positions being filled by the same players. However, this year has a new name on the trophy with Ian McGougan making amends for last year's disappointment, of losing on the count back of the best second round to Matthew MacAulay, by reversing the roles. Ian's superb opening round of 67, on the Saturday, saw him open up a seven shots lead from his nearest challengers, Matthew MacAulay and George MacMillan, a lead which Ian maintained comfortably during the second round, the following day. The 3 under par 67 contained an incredible run of 5 birdies in 6 holes from the 6 th and included a holed bunker shot at the 11 th . Dropped shots at the 12 th and 15 th dashed Ian's thoughts of setting a new course record. The in-form McGougan will now be hoping to complete a successful hat trick of trophies, following an earlier success in the Ugadale Trophy last month, by sealing victory in the McDiarmid Cup matchplay final against the club's vice-captain, Fergus Walker.
