The Commercial Inn Better Ball Open had a new sponsor this year, with Campbeltown building contractors, McKinven & Colville Ltd, generously supporting the hugely popular pairs event, in which 72 teams played.
On a dry but breezy day, the gents' handicap section had a really tight finish, with the top four teams all recording 4 under par, better ball, scores of 66. The count back rule for the best score on the inward half had to be used to separate the leading pairs, with the eventual winners being Stuart Gillespie (senior) and Robert McDonald. The victorious duo had a storming conclusion to their round, sharing 4 nett birdies from the twelfth hole before Stuart birdied the last for the new pairing to lift the trophy for the first time. Visitors from The Carrick Golf Club, Gordon Alexander and James Docherty, finished in second place by virtue of a better last three holes from 3 rd placed Donald McNeil and Norman Bowie.
The scratch section was won by the father and son pairing of David and Andrew Wallace with a par round of 70. Twos at the 4 th and 15 th holes greatly assisted their scorecard. Runner-up was David Irwin and Steven Gorman one stroke behind with 71, which was some consolation for missing out on the main handicap prize after posting a nett 66, however, with the poorest inward half.
The ladies' handicap winners were Ann Gallacher and Margaret Robertson with a 74 and the junior section was won by Mitch Graham and Cameron Wylie.
