Machrihanish Golf Club - Rotary Open

The Rotary Open, in aid of the South Kintyre senior citizens, was hosted by Machrihanish Golf Club on Saturday 8th August. On a dry day, until the rain arrived later in the afternoon, the majority of the field got round dry but were posed with a blustery wind, making scoring difficult. The winner of the gents' section was Jim McCallum with an excellent 75 less 6 nett 69. Jim's success was mainly due to a superb inward half of 35 (par), recording two birdies at the 15 th and 18 th holes to win by the narrowest of margins, on the count back rule, from visitor Ben Maskell. In fact the better inward half came down to the best last 6 holes and secured Jim an amazing 4 th win in one of the golf club's main events. The previous winning years were in 1998, 2004 and 2005. Ironically, the Rotary Open trophy was presented to the golf club in 1975 by the late Archie McCallum, the ex-provost of the Royal Burgh of Campbeltown. The McCallum surname is now well and truly engraved on the trophy.

The best scratch score was returned by former club captain and 16 times club champion, Stuart Campbell with an impressive 72. Stuart finished two shots clear of Lochgilphead's Matthew MacAulay.

The winning lady on the day was return visitor Elaine Robb with 90 less 13 nett 77. The junior section produced two great scores from debutants to the Championship Course, Daniel Kane and Arran MacCallum. Daniel pipping his friend to the first prize by two shots with an excellent 91 less 24 nett 67. The excellent work by the golf club in trying to encourage more juniors into golf appears to be reaping the rewards.

Campbeltown Rotary Club's president, Sue Morgan, thanked Machrihanish Golf Club for its continued support and also thanked those who had donated prizes and the competitors for taking part. She handed over a cheque for £1,000 to Mrs Diane Brodie in aid of the South Kintyre senior citizens.
