The Machrihanish Golf Club

Est 1876 | The Historic Links Golf Club & Course

Welcome To The Machrihanish Golf Club

Machrihanish has become well known in the last few years mainly because of its exceptional first hole which requires the round's opening shot to carry the Atlantic. It is a tough start, particularly into a breeze.

The course is set in wonderful dunes in the small village of Machrihanish, which is situated on the western side of the remote Kintyre Peninsula, this is where the sky is big, the sunsets are dramatic and the air has been warmed by the Gulf Stream and its relative inaccessibility has saved it from becoming more commercialised.

It is a joy to play and, most of the time, very quiet, allowing the visitor to relish the ups and downs of the fairways and the tussle with undulating greens. There are also arresting views across to the islands of Jura and Islay, which provide a delightful backdrop on an idyllic summer's day with the firm Machrihanish turf underfoot, the majesty of the dunes, and wheeling seabirds providing the only sound.

It is a varied test for the competent golfer, the layout is not just a predictable nine out, and nine back. The classic links holes, apart from the 1st, are the 5th, another par four with its fairway like an elephant's graveyard, the 10th, a clever dogleg par five and the 15th, a one shotter with real difficulty if the elusive green is missed from the tee.

Captain's Message ( April 2014 )

It is a great honour for me to be addressing all members and visitors alike, as the 2014 Club Captain of this world famous links course, The Machrihanish Golf Club. The club established in 1876 and designed by Old Tom Morris, remains virtually untouched since just after the 2nd World War.

I joined the club in 1965 as a 13 year old junior member, the year that the present clubhouse was officially opened. I have enjoyed playing the course over the years when there was no water to the greens, when you really had to play many bump and run shots, to the present day with water to the greens, where you can try and go straight to the pin with the very receptive greens.

Having been a member for all these years, this year is the wettest that can be remembered and we have had numerous water pools on the course due to the rising water table. It will take a few months for them all to disappear. Although it has been extremely wet there has been very little frost this year and the course remained open throughout the winter season.

I have been on the greens committee for 5 out of the last 6 years the last 2 as convenor, along with the head greenkeeper, his staff and the STRI agronomist we have been implementing a program to improve the condition of the greens and tees. In April we will be using a Graden sand injection machine, where a total of 55 tons of kiln dried sand will be injected to the 27 greens. I hope the members and visitors will bear with us in this effort to improve the greens. In view of this we will continue with winter green fees rising from £30 to £50 during April, until the start of May when the condition of the course will be reviewed.

The 2014 competitions have now started. I am pleased to announce that the following companies, The Ardshiel Hotel, Drumore Pine, and Springbank Distillery are going to sponsor the Am Am on Saturday 24th May.

I look forward to meeting all members and visitors during 2014 and hope that you have an enjoyable experience at our club

Best Regards

...

David Rankin, Captain
