Club Captain's Message

May I wish you a very warm welcome to The Machrihanish Golf Club website. I am sure that you will find these pages helpful and of interest.

While Machrihanish is a Club steeped in tradition dating from 1876, we take great pride in providing generous hospitality and a testing golf challenge. The course is a traditional links, which, like St Andrews, starts and finishes at the clubhouse within the town. It winds its way through the magical sand dunes along Machrihanish Bay in a classic 9 out, and 9 in layout. There are stunning views over sandy beaches, across to the Atlantic to the Northern Ireland to the south and to the islands of Islay and Jura to the west.

Our club has a long and proud history and is made famous by its opening hole which is reputedly the best opening hole in world golf. The fairway of the hole runs diagonally away from players, forcing a brave "bite-off-as-much-as-you-can-chew" swing off the first tee to carry the beach.

The course was built 140 years ago by Old Tom Morris who stated that "The Almichty Maun hae had gowf in his e'e when he made this place".

In the 19th Century the club hosted many of the legendary challenge matches and has hosted a number of high profile national events over the years in particular the Scottish Professional Golf Championship in 1964 and 1969.

Additionally, the Scottish ladies amateur championship has been contested 6 times at our course, most recently in 2011. We have a course of real quality, presented and maintained to the highest standards thanks to the efforts of Darren McLaughlan our Head Greenkeeper. This is reflected in Golf Digest recently listing us number 91 in their Top 100 of the World's greatest Golf Courses 2016.

The club is was also given the accolade of representing the 4 th best value for money golf experience in 2015 by the national club golfer magazine.

In our clubhouse you will find a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and be made welcome by our staff and members. Catering is available where you can enjoy anything from a light snack and a drink after your game to a full Sunday lunch or evening meal in the more formal surrounds of our newly decorated dining room.

I hope you enjoy browsing the website and any comments are welcome via our 'contact us' page. I am very proud to be the Captain of this prestigious Club and look forward to welcoming you to play and experience a truly wonderful Links, whose memory will live with you long after you have returned home.
